Sad, glad and thoughtful

sharpest pencil week

It’s been such a super quick week this week that I kind of forgot to update my blog.  Technically I have two excuses

1. I had a colonoscopy this week and so tried to pretend that two days this week did not exist

2. I have been writing every day for Kidspot (and loving it) so my brain is full of “other” words and it seems that I do have a limited number of words after all (even though Mr Pencil would not agree with that)

But I am back too play my favourite game of what made me sad, what made me glad and what had me thinking

Sad

Colonoscopy

My colonoscopy made me sad. Well, not so much the actual colonoscopy but the preparation for it which is bloody awful. That said I am very glad that there are screening processes like this in place. Better safe than sorry and all that.

Abuse

The other things that made me really sad this week (and proper sad, not sorry for myself sad) were two hideous cases of child abuse that I read about and one awful case of animal abuse. I know that these things are happening all the time but reading the details makes me feel hopelessly maudlin.

Glad

Whales

The whales have freedom to swim in their own home after Japan was ordered to immediately end the killing of whales in the Antarctic. This makes me very, very glad. Although I did spend a lot of time thinking about fish and whales and why whales are so important because they are so huge and because they are mammals but fish are not so important because they are small and not mammals.  Did I mention that I sometimes want to cry when I go into a fish shop? That’s my vegetarian rant for the day

Grant Hackett

I really applaud Grant Hackett for talking out about his need for help. I watched the news and saw them reporting “Breaking News” on Grant Hackett leaving Los Angeles where he was seeking rehabilitation treatment and I was prepared to be appalled. I thought it would be tabloid hogwash with varying comments on what he was going through but instead there was Grant himself talking about what a rough time he had been having and how he had taken the steps to remedy that.

I wish I was better at doing that.

With a high media profile and a big fan base it does so much good for a person like Grant Hackett to say “I wasn’t coping and I needed some help”

Socks

I also discovered where all the socks go – which is great news

Made me think

As keen readers , (my family) would know we bought a house last weekend. I have not stopped thinking how lucky I am to have the life that I have, the things I have around me but most importantly my husband who is the best human being on this earth. Without him I would have nothing.

I think about this all the time and I am eternally and endlessly grateful that he is in my life.

Phew, what a note to end on.

Your turn now – what made you sad and glad this week and what made you think?
