#5minutes with Kerri and Lana : The Ugly Child Edition

Recently there was a post on Reddit from a woman who wrote saying that she was aware that her child was ugly or, er not conventionally attractive. Kerri wrote a post about it on Essential Kids and caused a few people to say things that were quite ugly or, er not conventionally attractive.

We chatted about ugly kids here. But far and away the best part is how antsy Kerri gets at the end. And my facial reaction to her snippy farewell.

  1. Why are you even discussing this? Its such a shallow subject. Beauty comes from within. The kids and adults with the quirks and oddities veering away from the norm are the most attractive. I love watching English movies because everyone has crooked teeth. We’ve (unfortunately) become conditioned to an ideal via media saturation. Beauty is difference. I do appreciate your chats though. You raise some interesting topics.

    • Thanks Pinky, I’m with you – I think the whole way society defines what is beautiful needs to be examined and changed

  2. My firstborn at birth looked like Chairman Mao and the second like Flacco. Neither the best looks for small girls if we’re being completely objective but they’re pretty darn cute now. I don’t think five minutes was quite long enough to cover this particular topic, because I get both sides – we do need to change our perceptions and what is inside is what should count most of all, but we also have to be realistic about the impact our appearance has on our interactions with other people. And there are ways of building up a child’s esteem and resilience without calling them beautiful or pretending that inner beauty matters a jot in the mean streets of a school playground before people get to know you.

And as a point, everybody that insulted the mother or Kerri without knowing jack diddly squat about the person inside just demonstrated where their kids are learning the name calling, the judgement and the petty behaviour that we see manifested in those same playgrounds.
