Sarah Haynes, nobody’s school is perfect. But we already know that

Recently Sarah Haynes, the school captain of Ravenswood made news by telling it like she saw it at her farewell assembly. My first thought was that Ravenswood sounded like a house out of Harry Potter but my second and subsequent thoughts were much more considered.

Sarah is young, she is in a privileged position of leadership and I believe she should take that position seriously. It doesn’t matter whether the school is private, public or part of Hogwarts.

When you are an adult and you work for an organisation you tow the organisation’s line. Sometimes you don’t agree with it but there are other things that make you happy so you shut up and accept it. Sometimes it’s too much so you pack your bags and go. At the farewell party you smile graciously and then, if you want to burn all your bridges, you send a tirade by group email when you leave. Hint: It’s never a good idea to burn all your bridges. There are better way to handle things than the element of surprise bomb when your nearest and dearest are gathered together.

Broken

One of the things I remember most vividly about my childhood is being scared. I remember staring out at the playground in primary school and wondering how all these kids would survive a war. I recall lying in my bed at night being terrified, hearing the noise of big trucks and believing they were coming to get me to take me away. I remember being petrified my mother had been kidnapped by the Russians and replaced with a robot programmed to act like her. (Yes, the cold war propaganda got to me.)

Cate Blanchett and I do not understand the selfie

no selfieAs I approach my 198th year I spend a lot more time wondering why people behave the way they do. I like to think I’m a late blooming quasi-anthropologist whereas, in reality, I’m just becoming more crotchety and intolerant.

I’m fairly chill with the “youth of the today”. I don’t have issue with people younger than me because I can remember what it felt like to want to rebel/be different/take drugs. Plus there is an inherent understanding that their experiences are vastly different to mine and so I cannot expect to get them 100% but I accept them.

The 8 podcasts you want to listen to

“You can no longer read in the bath” my doctor said, his words ripping through my very soul. “you’re straining your neck and that’s what’s causing that pain and tingling down your arm”.

There would have been a time in my life where I would have ignored him and taken all the codeine with a glass of red wine to relax my neck and form an even stronger addiction to my bath. But because I’m such a mature well-balanced woman I developed another addiction instead – the podcast. Listening in the bath allowed me to continue to soak in words and water. Perfect.

Let’s change ALL the supermarket shopping rules

Go home old peopleYou’ll be thrilled to know that a delightful woman by the name of Beverly Macca has taken the time to write to her local newspaper. I know nothing about Beverly other than she works from nine to five so she is very busy and important. Mind you after reading her letter I also know that she’s a wee bit rude.

But still, she took time out from her very busy life to write to the Editor of The Herald so clearly something was niggling her– and I get it, her letter was about supermarket shopping which is a highly critical event.

Don’t be the person in these photos

Haley Morris-Cafiero

I didn’t know how to feel about this when I first saw it, the idea of public shaming is abhorrent to me, more so since reading Jon Ronson’s spectacular book So You’ve Been Publicly  Shamed. But here was a slew of self portrait photographs of a woman who dared to be fat showing the reactions she received from people in the street.

“When photographer Haley Morris-Cafiero developed a self-portrait she had taken in Times Square, something stood out. There in the background, surrounded by a riot of colourful advertising and soaring tower blocks, was a man smirking at her back.

Instead of being hurt, Haley was intrigued, turning it into the first piece in her extraordinary series Wait Watchers, which looks at the meaning of other people’s stares.

“He was being photographed by this woman, so to have him focused on me was really interesting,” Haley, an associate professor at Memphis College of Art, told news.com.au. “Then five minutes later, it happened again.”

The 39-year-old began setting up her camera in crowded streets, beaches and shopping districts all over the world, using a remote to capture how other people reacted to her. The result is a revealing and uncomfortable collection of suppressed smiles, sneers, puzzlement and wide-eyed fascination.

“I don’t care what anybody thinks,” she said. “I pick images if something looks critical on a stranger’s face.”

Not The Bachelor review you’re looking for

There’s s a strange phenomenon that seems to happen every time The Bachelor airs. Thousands of women sit down in front of the TV and tear apart other women under the guise of reviewing or live tweeting the show.

I don’t watch The Bachelor because I don’t agree with the premise, I don’t like the concept of dating shows and I am trying desperately to stop hate-viewing/reading in general. But by mistake I watched Twitter for a while last night.

On writing for free and other hot button topics

Parenting has certain hot button topics, subjects which you know the mere mention of will incite and inflame “discussion”. So too does blogging, but Instead of sleep training, breastfeeding and childcare the issues that seem to incite the most opinion in the blogging world are advertising, PR requests and payment.

The payment thing is not reserved for bloggers alone. Any freelance creative will have something to add to the conversation, usually something derived from first hand experience because creative people are often asked to work for free.

So it is with this background that I am stepping ever so carefully onto the internet with my opinion borne from my experience. So consider it just that.

The real reason I love the rainbow profile pic on Facebook

Screen Shot 2015-07-01 at 11.34.48 amI’m the first person to knock posts that say things like “Like this post to save this child’s life” or some such other bullshit, Both you and I, and the creator of that post know that liking an image on Facebook ain’t going to do a thing to change anybody’s life, health or living circumstance. Most times the posts are created to create traffic to a page – and they are good at that, that’s all they are good for,

Liking the post won’t harm anyone but it certainly won’t help them.

Oh Belle Gibson, I feel so sad

Last night after I watched the Belle Gibson interview on 60 Minutes I went to Facebook saying:

“I have left the Belle Gibson feeling really really sad. I know what she did was awful, illegal and immoral and there are people suffering real sickness that is way worse because of her. I do not condone her behaviour for a moment but it is clear that although she is physically well, she is clearly a very sick woman.
