Did I just win 2013?

holiday 2013I could feel my chest tightening, my pulse quicken. I could sense the pressure squeezing my entire body , tightest around the heart. A very familiar feeling of panic coursed through my veins. But only very briefly because with huge relief I remembered that this was no longer my life.

I was reading my ex-colleague Alana House’s blog this morning as I do every morning simply because I love the way she blogs. Her blog is quick, clever honest and, for me, very relatable. Usually it doesn’t make me feel sick

True Confession: I have an addiction

diet coke addictionAbout a month or so ago I was feeling very sanctimonious. I had announced to the world that I was giving up Diet Coke. I felt like one of the healthy people as I reveled in my new-found hatred of drinking “black acid”.

As I scrolled through the scores and scores of articles online I felt better and better about my decision to give up. Diet Coke has been linked to a variety of medical problems, everything from weak bones to kidney dysfunction, acid reflux to reproductive disorders. Researchers have compared the effect of the acid in diet drinks to the use of methamphetamine. I have seen Breaking Bad, I don’t want those teeth.

This Christmas I am making a wish. I want you to join me

I woke up feeling very sorry for myself this morning. My litany of complaints was long.

• My son was going on camp today and as much as he was excited, the control freak in me was hugely out of sorts with the idea of having no contact with him for five days.
• It is ridiculously hot
• I have been having the most terrible nightmares and therefore not getting nearly enough sleep
• On a scale of one to ten of cranky I was an 11

I hate heat, sand and crowds in no particular order

I am not a beach person. I hate heat, sand and crowds in no particular order.

School holidays in Sydney are a particularly hard time for me because my son loves the beach, in fact he loves the heat, sand and crowds in no particular order.

The real reason I’m not joining this blogging game

losing memoryI have completely misplaced my memory.

This has come to my attention once again since my friend Kerri Sackville started a little blogging game called #MyFirst. Every Monday she provides a prompt for herself and other bloggers to write about their first experiences in a raft of different subjects. I really want to join in but I can’t because I cant remember anything.

13 things I learned from my son’s primary school years

What I learned from primary schoolIt’s the end of an era for me today, well actually it’s the end of an era for my son who finishes primary school this afternoon. But, like many things I have learned through being a mother, it’s mostly me that’s been affected.

He was very excited this morning as we headed off on our well trodden route to the school gate, mostly though it was because they were going swimming today and I had packed him the weight of a large dumbbell in sugar. He’s quite nonplussed about the whole high school thing. Maybe it’s because his high school is on the same campus as the primary school or maybe it’s because he’s a lot better at dealing with change than I am.

Hold me, I tried to go shopping AT A BOUTIQUE

you are obviously in the wrong placeYesterday was a nightmare of a shopping day. Not because I was dealing with Christmas stress (one of the benefits of being Jewish) but because I was dealing with retail assistants. Only they weren’t dealing with me.

Now I am not going to generalize, I’m just going to divide all retail staff into two broad categories. Some of them are lovely and friendly and delightful and, just like every other sector of the universe some of them are hideous. It seems that the bulk of the hideous ones work in boutique style shops.

Can you sleep at night?

insomniaIt’s almost the end of the year and everyone is feeling a little frazzled and worn. You can read it on Facebook, sense it in the shopping centre and hear about it from everyone you know. So while I am not alone in being absolutely exhausted I think I have a particularly severe form of exhaustion because I cannot sleep.

I have always been a problem sleeper, I can only imagine that I must have been a nightmare as a baby, and it’s not getting any better with age. Of course, like all insomniacs, I go through periods that are worse than others so I decided to make a list of what it is that is keeping me wide awake from the 2am-6am time slot

The week that was

Welcome to my week, well at least a reflection on it

Bad

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” – Nelson Mandela

It’s hard to explain how much Nelson Mandela meant to me as a South African. A bastion of strength, freedom, courage and honour. A man who was like God in stature yet felt like part of your own family in his humility and grace. I remember the time my sister met him and shook his hand, she almost refused to wash her hand ever again. I was glad to be with her this morning when I heard of his passing.  I imagine that many people feel the connection I do today. Hamba Kahle Madiba, rest forever in peace.   And I hope with every fibre of my being that South Africa can keep it together.
