This is what a Bar Mitzvah is really all about

Bar Mitzvah practice

This is our 789th practice session for the Synagogue part

Next week is my son’s Bar Mitzvah.

According to Jewish faith Bar Mitzvah happens when a boy comes of age at 13-years-old and is recognised, by Jewish tradition, as having the same rights as a full grown man. A boy who has become Bar Mitzvah is morally and ethically responsible for his decisions and actions.

The term “bar mitzvah” also refers to the religious ceremony that accompanies a boy becoming Bar Mitzvah.  This is basically a religious ceremony at Synagogue where the boy is called to read from the Torah in Hebrew and deliver his learnings –  ie what he has learned from that Torah portion he is reading.

It’s definitely one of the most important days in a Jewish man’s life and possibly one of the most nachas-filled for his parents (nachas is a Yiddish term for pride).

And now that I have been all earnest and politically correct I will tell you a few home truths about what the Bar Mitzvah is also about according to Jewish tradition rather than Jewish faith

  • It’s about the mother of the Bar Mitzvah boy . People keep asking ME how I am coping or how ready I am. To be honest I am coping very well with the fact that I don’t have to sing in Hebrew in front of 200 people
  • It’s about stress.  Making sure the child has learned all his lines, the food is in abundance, the disco is paid for, the Instagram tag is right, the  speeches are written and nobody is left out, the entertainment is booked, the venue is teenage-proof and so on. Actually maybe that’s why people think it’s all about the mother.
  • It’s about the party. I know that this is not exactly how it’s meant to be and for religious people it is not about the party at all.  But for us, it sort of is about the party. A celebration of his life (and a chance to get all our friends together)
  • It’s about choosing the right event planner which is something I never dreamed I would say but also the reason that I sleep at night
  • It’s about having friends and family all come together for a very special occasion.  See my point about stress above
  • It’s about seeing the best in people – my sister is literally holding my hand through the process she’s also hosting the all important pre-celebration Friday night dinner, my friends are offering food, lifts for my family from overseas and alcohol. At the moment I am accepting the alcohol offers just to be polite *coughs*
  • It’s about trying to write a speech without sobbing and forgetting how to put words in sentences that make sense
  • It’s about photos (well for me it is – for people who missed my photo fixation you can read about a small part of it here)
  • It’s about buying dresses, getting tans, manicures and facials (again possibly not in more religious circles)
  • It’s about food and eating because it’s Jewish and being Jewish is a bit like everything being about food and eating
  • It’s about feeling very connected to your community
